Rockport’s story began in Marlborough, Massachusetts, with Saul L. Katz and his son, Bruce R. Katz. They sold hand-sewn heavy leather moccasin shoes modelled after a shoe developed by Walter Dyer to shoe stores up and down the East coast.

The Kats’ sold the shoes in a plain wooden box, and after learning that other shoe designers were starting to copy their designs, calling them the Rockport style shoe, they officially named the shoes “the Rockport.” The father and son formed the Rockport Company in 1971 to produce casual and comfortable leather shoes with the comfort of a running shoe.

In 1986, the company was sold to Reebok and that year had sales of nearly $100 million.

Later, Reebok sold again to German footwear company Addidas. The Rockport Company and Drydock Footwear now form The Rockport Group, which still makes the quality footwear we know today.
