How Long Do Custom Orthotics Last?

Posted by Orthotics Direct on 2021 Aug 16th

If you’re unacquainted with orthotics, perhaps, being a new customer, you might ask the question: how long do custom orthotics last? It’s a fair question to ask - after all, you want to get the best bang for your buck. More importantly, you want to avoid spending on orthotics too frequently and finding yourself in uncomfortable situations if they wear out too fast. In this post, we’ll take a quick look at how long custom orthotics (typically) last, and what you can do to make them last as long as possible.

What’s the Typical Lifespan of Custom Orthotics

Assuming you buy high-quality, custom products, your orthotics will last somewhere between two to three years. Unlike store-bought inserts, custom orthotics are built to withstand daily wear and tear, whether that’s from walking, standing or even running. So you don’t have to worry about them becoming like a monthly subscription or even an annual purchase.

With that said, the lifespan of your orthotics can vary considerably when compared to someone else. For example, how often you use them will affect their longevity. The more you use them, the faster they’ll wear out. Also, if you’re wearing orthotics for strenuous activities (ie. sports that involve lots of running and jumping), they’ll wear out faster as well.

The materials used to make your orthotics will also play a role in how long they last. Insoles that you buy from the store (ie. cork insoles), tend to be lower quality, and you might have to replace them once a year, even more. Custom insoles made with rigid materials and foam will last longer.

And of course, there are some other factors to think about. For example, having surgeries may require you to replace your orthotics a little more often to correct gait abnormalities. Pregnant women, who often see changes in their gait, may also need to replace their orthotics during their term. So depending on your circumstances, your mileage may vary. But under most conditions, you can expect to get two to three years out of your orthotics.

How Do You Know When it’s Time to Replace Orthotics?

The good news about replacing your orthotics is that it’s fairly straightforward to know when a replacement is due. A visual check will do the trick. If you see cracks and tears, then that’s a clear sign that you need new orthotics. Also, if you feel like the return of pain or discomfort that the orthotics once corrected, then that’s a sign they don’t work well anymore. Of course, if you’re unsure, you can always visit your podiatrist who can point out whether you need to keep or replace them.

How to Make Your Orthotics Last Longer

Orthotics won’t last forever (unless you never use them). However, you can make them last as long as possible or longer than their intended lifespan. Most of this boils down to habits and usage, two things you have direct control over.

Simple Tips to Make Orthotics Last Longer

  • Use them for activities they’re prescribed for (nothing else)
  • Store them in a safe place (leave them in your shoes)
  • Purchase orthotics from a reputable brand or vendor (do this next time if you haven’t done so)

It’s really as simple as that. Once they’re kept out of harm’s way and not overused, your orthotics should last for a couple years, maybe even a tad longer.
